When it comes to family beach holidays, Mauritius keeps earning its place at the top of the list.
For us, it is one of those destinations that just works. It is easy enough to get to, relaxed once you arrive, and packed with the kind of family friendly experiences that make travelling with children feel far less complicated. Having travelled to Mauritius extensively, it has become our go to spot for a July family holiday, and for good reason.
One of the biggest advantages is how accessible it is from South Africa. With easy flight options from both Johannesburg and Cape Town, and travel times generally coming in at under eight hours, Mauritius gives families that sought after island holiday feel without the pain of a long haul journey. That matters more than people think, especially when you are travelling with younger children. The idea of paradise is a lot more appealing when it does not involve twenty hours of airport snacks, delays and survival mode parenting.
Once you arrive, the whole experience tends to feel simple. Resorts are well set up for families, transfers are straightforward, and the beaches are exactly what most parents are hoping for, beautiful, calm and safe enough for both little ones and bigger kids to enjoy. You are not constantly worried about rough surf or complicated logistics. You can actually relax, which, for a family holiday, is half the battle won.
Mauritius also shines when it comes to all inclusive travel. At first glance, all inclusive resorts can seem expensive, but in reality they often work out far better value than expected, especially for families. Meals, snacks, drinks and activities are already taken care of, which means fewer daily decisions, fewer surprise costs and a lot less admin while you are away.
This is particularly helpful if you are travelling with children who are a little fussy with food. Instead of trying to find a restaurant that suits everyone three times a day, buffets make life much easier. There is usually always something available, and the flexibility that comes with that is a game changer. When little appetites change every five minutes, having food sorted and easily accessible is worth its weight in gold.
Two of the standout family favourites we love recommending are Beachcomber Canonnier and Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers.
Beachcomber Canonnier has long been a favourite for families looking for a beautiful beachfront resort with a warm, easy atmosphere. It offers the kind of setup that works incredibly well for parents travelling with children. The pools are well suited to families, the beach is calm and inviting, and there is plenty of space for kids to swim, explore and enjoy being outdoors without the whole trip feeling overly formal or restrictive. It strikes a lovely balance between relaxed island escape and genuinely practical family holiday.
Club Med, though, really deserves a special mention when it comes to family travel. They understand that a good family holiday is not just about keeping the adults happy or entertaining toddlers for an hour. They go the extra mile across the board, especially for tweens and teens, which is where many family resorts start to lose momentum.
That is one of the things Club Med does exceptionally well. Their kids club offering is not just a box ticking exercise. It is thoughtfully designed, properly run and genuinely engaging for different age groups. Younger children are well looked after with activities suited to their pace and interests, while older kids and teens are given space, independence and more age appropriate fun. That matters because family holidays get much easier when every age group feels included, not just tolerated.
For little ones, both Club Med and Canonnier offer pools that are especially well designed for younger children, making it easier for parents to enjoy pool time without feeling constantly on edge. It is these details that make a real difference, the shallower spaces, the easier layouts, the family friendly environment, all adding up to a more enjoyable holiday for everyone.
Another reason Mauritius works so well is the amount of activity built into the resort experience. Families can enjoy snorkelling, glass bottom boat trips, beach activities and excursions that add variety without needing to overplan every day. In many cases, some of these experiences are already included, which adds even more value to the overall holiday. It gives you enough to do without turning the trip into a schedule packed with pressure.
And then there are the beaches themselves. Mauritius really does deliver here. The beaches are beautiful, calm and ideal for families, whether you have a toddler wanting to paddle at the edge, older kids building sandcastles and chasing fish in the shallows, or teenagers wanting a mix of freedom and fun. The island has that rare ability to feel both peaceful and activity filled at the same time.
For South African families looking for a holiday that feels special but still manageable, Mauritius is hard to beat. It is close enough to be easy, beautiful enough to feel like a real escape, and practical enough to take much of the stress out of travelling with children.
That is why it remains one of our most recommended family destinations, and why it continues to be our own go to for a July break.
If you are looking at Mauritius for your next family holiday, we can help you choose the right resort based on your children’s ages, your travel style and the kind of experience you want. Because not all family holidays are created equal, and the right fit makes all the difference.
